Persian Carpets as a Business: What Every Importer Must Understand

A genuine handwoven Persian carpet is not simply a floor covering — it is a cultural artefact that has appreciated in value over centuries and continues to command prices from a few hundred to several hundred thousand dollars. For importers considering this category, understanding the fundamentals of quality, pricing, and authenticity is not optional.

The Three Pillars of Persian Carpet Value

1. Knot Count (KPSI — Knots Per Square Inch)

The single most important technical quality indicator. Higher knot count allows finer design detail and indicates more labour investment. Typical ranges:

  • Coarse tribal rugs (Gabbeh): 25–60 KPSI
  • Standard workshop carpets: 80–160 KPSI
  • Premium Kashan/Isfahan: 200–400 KPSI
  • Fine Qom silk: 400–900+ KPSI

2. Material

Wool: The most common. Quality varies enormously — mountain wool from sheep grazed at high altitude has a natural lanolin content and sheen that lowland wool cannot match. Kork wool (from the neck of sheep) is the finest grade used in top-tier carpets.

Silk: Produces the highest resolution designs and a distinctive lustrous sheen. Pure silk Qom carpets are among the most valuable handmade textiles in the world. Harder to clean and less durable than wool for high-traffic areas — best suited for wall display or low-traffic rooms.

Silk and Wool combination: Wool foundation with silk pile highlights. Common in Isfahan and Tabriz carpets — gives the shimmer of silk at a more accessible price.

3. Regional Origin

Each major weaving region has a distinct design vocabulary and knotting tradition:

  • Qom (Qum): Finest silk carpets. Intricate curvilinear designs, very high KPSI. The pinnacle of Iranian carpet production.
  • Kashan: Dense wool carpets with medallion and garden designs. Historically the most recognised Iranian carpet internationally.
  • Isfahan: Elegant curvilinear designs, often combining wool pile on a silk foundation. Sophisticated market-favourite designs.
  • Tabriz: The commercial centre of Iranian carpet weaving. Enormous design range from traditional to pictorial. "Raj" count system used (50-raj is fine quality; 70-raj is exceptional).
  • Gabbeh: Tribal flat-weave style from Qashqai tribe. Geometric, bold, more contemporary appeal. Growing popularity in European design markets.

Authentication: Avoiding Costly Mistakes

Machine-made carpets woven to imitate Persian designs are produced in large quantities in China, Belgium, and Turkey. Distinguishing them from handwoven pieces requires knowing what to look for:

  • Examine the back: handwoven carpets show slight irregularities in the knot rows; machine-made backs are perfectly uniform
  • Check the fringe: genuine handwoven fringes are an extension of the warp threads; machine-made fringes are sewn on separately
  • Feel the pile depth variation: genuine hand-knotted carpets have slight pile height variation that is impossible to replicate by machine

Import Considerations for Carpets

Persian carpets are classified as handmade goods, not agricultural products, so they do not require phytosanitary certificates. Key documents: commercial invoice, packing list, COO from ICCIMA, and — for pieces over a certain age — documentation confirming they are not classified as cultural heritage items (a consideration for antique pieces over 100 years old).

Duty rates vary: EU importers currently benefit from low tariff rates on handwoven carpets. US importers should confirm current tariff status, as this has been subject to change. UAE has zero tariff on carpets from most origins.
