Analitik giriş
When discussing 'Iranian edible oil', distinguish seed origin, extraction/refining location and packing country.
Iran has strong crushing, refining, blending and packing capacity, but remains highly dependent on international trade in oilseeds and crude oil.
2024 data show exports are not uniform by oil type — Iraq for corn and olive, Senegal for 151219, Germany for sesame.
1. Structure of Iran's Edible Oil Industry
Iran's oil market is a large processing industry. Iranian plants refine domestic seed oil as well as imported oilseeds and crude oil. In FY 1404 the Ministry of Agriculture planned supply around 1.2 million tonnes of imported crude vegetable oil, about 500,000 tonnes of palm oil, plus domestic production and oilseed imports.
For foreign buyers the practical point is clear: 'Made in Iran' or 'refined in Iran' does not necessarily mean the agricultural origin is Iranian. Three main models exist: Iranian seed extracted and refined domestically; imported seed crushed in Iran (soybean is a key example); imported crude oil refined and packed in Iran.
2. Main Types of Iranian Edible Oils
Edible oils should first be classified by botanical source. Codex CXS 210-1999 defines named vegetable oils including soybean, sunflower, sesame, safflower and low-erucic rapeseed separately.
High-oleic sunflower must contain at least 75% oleic acid. Canola (low-erucic rapeseed) must not exceed 2% erucic acid. Iranian corn oil had visible presence in Iraq in 2024 trade data. Sesame and olive oils sit in higher value-added segments.
| Oil | Key trait | Flavour | Main use | Oxidation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunflower | Linoleic or high oleic | Neutral | Cooking & frying | Fatty acid dependent |
| Soybean | Mixed fatty acids | Neutral | Food industry | Medium to high |
| Canola | Low erucic rapeseed | Neutral | Cooking & sauces | Medium |
| Corn | From corn germ | Mild | Retail & sauces | Medium |
| Sesame | Distinct aroma | Mild to aromatic | Specialty | Relatively stable |
| Olive | High oleic | Fruity in virgin | Premium | Relatively stable |
| Cottonseed | By-product | Neutral | Industrial | Medium |
| Safflower | Linoleic or oleic | Neutral | Specialty | Profile dependent |
3. Refined, Virgin, Cold-Pressed and Blended Oils
Virgin oil is produced mechanically without changing the oil's nature. Refined oil passes degumming, neutralisation, bleaching and deodorisation for a more neutral flavour and uniform colour.
'Cold pressed' must reflect the real process. In blended oils, each component percentage must be stated for export. 'Vegetable cooking oil' without composition is not enough for a professional contract.
4. Technical Specifications Importers Should Request
Buying oil from bottle photos or the phrase 'grade one' is not suitable for bulk trade. Specifications must be numeric and testable. The certificate of analysis must relate to the same batch or shipment.
On Iranco you can enter technical specs, order volume, packaging and destination in a sourcing request so suppliers are compared on the same product definition.
| Parameter | Specification | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Oil source | Sunflower, soy, corn, etc. | Product identity |
| Process | Virgin, pressed, refined | Quality |
| Fatty acid profile | Chromatography | Authenticity |
| Free fatty acids | Agreed limit | Quality |
| Peroxide value | Contract limit | Oxidation |
| Moisture & volatiles | Agreed maximum | Stability |
| Insoluble impurities | Defined limit | Refining |
| COA | Same batch | Proof of specs |
5. Quality Control of Edible Oils
Peroxide value, free fatty acids and fatty acid profile are core QC tools. Fraud does not always show visually; blending expensive oil with cheaper oil may need laboratory testing to detect.
For olive oil, the IOC Trade Standard (Rev.22, 2026) updates adulteration detection methods. Codex CXS 33-1981 sets maximum free acidity of virgin olive oil at 0.8 g per 100 g.
6. Tariff Codes and Correct Classification
Oils fall in HS Chapter 15. At six digits: 151219 covers non-crude sunflower or safflower oil; 151529 non-crude corn oil; 151550 sesame oil; 150910 virgin olive oil.
National extensions beyond six digits differ by country. Exporters should not treat a four-digit code as the final destination classification.
| Group | HS code | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Soybean oil | 1507 | Soybean & fractions |
| Olive oil | 1509 | Olive |
| Sunflower/safflower/cotton | 1512 | Non-crude: 151219 |
| Canola/rapeseed | 1514 | Low erucic |
| Other vegetable | 1515 | Corn, sesame, etc. |
| Hydrogenated | 1516 | Chemical modification |
7. Iran's Export Markets by Oil Type
Export destinations change with the oil. Iraq for corn and virgin olive oil; Senegal and Lebanon for line 151219; Germany for sesame oil appear in 2024 data.
Iraq imported 127 tonnes of non-crude corn oil and over 16 tonnes of virgin olive oil from Iran. Germany recorded about 19,000 kg of Iranian sesame oil worth roughly USD 73,700.
| Product | Code | Destination | 2024 volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-crude corn oil | 151529 | Iraq | 127,058 kg |
| Non-crude corn oil | 151529 | Lebanon | 40,198 kg |
| Sunflower/safflower | 151219 | Senegal | 91,220 kg |
| Sunflower/safflower | 151219 | Lebanon | 19,907 kg |
| Virgin olive oil | 150910 | Iraq | 16,219 kg |
| Sesame oil | 151550 | Germany | 19,000 kg |
8. Export Packaging and Shipping
Oil is sensitive to light, oxygen, heat and container contamination. Virgin olive, pressed sesame and specialty oils need protective packaging design.
Industrial buyers use drums, bulk tanks or tankers. Temperature control matters for bottled oil in hot containers. Some lines use inert gas in headspace to limit oxygen.
9. How Export Prices Are Set
Price cannot be compared on product name alone. Two 'sesame oil' offers may differ completely in process, purity and packaging.
Unusually low prices for valuable oils like sesame and olive need review. Samples and batch COA are essential before contract.
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Seed/crude oil price | Base cost |
| Extraction method | Press vs industrial |
| Refining level | Process cost & loss |
| Purity | Pure vs blend |
| Packaging | Bottle, drum, bulk |
| Order volume | Unit cost |
10. Importer Checklist
- Define the exact oil name — 'vegetable oil' is not enough.
- State whether crude, virgin, pressed or refined.
- Agree raw material origin in the contract if it matters.
- Include fatty acid profile and peroxide limits in the contract.
- Demand sample and COA for the same batch.
- Define packaging, destination label and shipping conditions.
- Align HS code with the destination customs broker.
- Plan pre-shipment inspection for large orders.
11. Which Oil Suits Which Buyer?
Sauce and ready-meal plants need neutral flavour and competitive price — soybean, sunflower or canola. Frying plants focus on heat stability and fatty acid profile.
Premium retail favours virgin olive, sesame and pressed oils. Bulk food factories prioritise bulk price, spec stability and monthly capacity.

FAQ
Which edible oils are produced or processed in Iran?
Soybean, sunflower, canola, corn, sesame, olive, cottonseed and safflower. Part of the raw material is imported; origin should be stated separately from refining location.
What is the difference between regular and high-oleic sunflower?
The fatty acid profile differs. High-oleic must be at least 75% oleic acid and usually offers better oxidative stability.
Which countries import Iranian edible oils?
It depends on the oil: Iraq for corn and virgin olive; Senegal and Lebanon for 151219; Germany for sesame in 2024 data.
Which tests matter most?
Fatty acid profile, peroxide, free fatty acids, moisture and insoluble impurities. Authenticity, trans fats and heavy metals may also be required.
Is oil packed in Iran always from Iranian seed?
No. Iran imports seed and crude oil; agricultural origin must be contractually defined if it matters.
