Ben County — cradle of Mamaei almonds

Ben County on the Zayandeh Rud foothills is Iran’s main Mamaei almond (Prunus dulcis cv. Mamaee) production hub. With 3,500–4,000 ha of bearing orchards and roughly half the province’s riverside almond area, it sets quality benchmarks for Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari.

Orchards above 2,100 m with 700–900 winter chill hours, intense fill-period sun and permeable reservoir soils yield golden crystalline kernels and high oil content. The national almond festival in Ben supports export branding and regional marketing.

Cultivar traits, twinning and co-products

Mamaei is a late-bloom, early-harvest cultivar with a very hard shell; kernel yield is about 36–40% with 40–50% physiological twinning — a luxury trait in destination retail.

Green hulls go to feed and biochar; woody shell (~60% of harvest) feeds briquette and activated-carbon lines; kernels supply nuts, confectionery, pharma oil and almond butter. International pricing uses kernel count per 100 g.

Dual flow: raw outflow and local chain

Ben’s harvest-season production model:

1

Raw exit to Isfahan

Part of in-hull tonnage moves to Najafabad workshops for export sort and certificates of origin.

2

Ben & Vardenjan workshops

Mechanical hulling, impact cracking and conditioning recover local volume.

3

Sort & count grading

80–140 kernel bands; optical sort needed for top-tier export contracts.

4

Grower cooperatives

Ravzan Vardenjan and Darazdarre Ben strengthen farm-gate bargaining.

5

India export lane

Over 90% of Ben Mamaei kernels ultimately reach Mumbai and Mamra retail channels.

Export structure, intermediaries and gaps

Over 90% of Ben Mamaei kernels ship to Indian ports (especially Mumbai) as Mamra Badam; the Gulf, Germany, Turkey and Russia are secondary outlets.

Value added in Najafabad, Indian broker concentration, limited optical sorting and FX commitment friction are the main pressures on Ben grower income.

A Ben geographical indication plus contract farming with lead exporters such as Aghajan Gostar protects Mamra origin identity.

Until a dedicated customs post and laser sorters operate in Ben industrial park, much export margin is captured outside the county.

Structural challenges and technology response

1

Value leakage

Export sorting and packing in Najafabad weakens Ben’s visibility in global Mamra channels.

2

Indian demand concentration

No central exchange lets seasonal low bids and broker margins squeeze farm-gate returns.

3

Sorting technology

Grade separation is still largely manual; machine vision is required for premium export specs.

Value-add leap strategy for Ben

Equip Ben and Vardenjan food zones with controlled-atmosphere cold stores and a dedicated almond customs post.

Deploy optical sorters and hard-shell carbon lines to monetise 60% orchard waste sustainably.

Scale contract farming between Ravzan, Darazdarre cooperatives and export leaders; anchor the national almond festival as a B2B showcase.
