GDP is about USD 33.8 billion (upper-middle income). Tourism and urban income in Tbilisi and Batumi diversify household baskets.
Total goods imports run USD 6–10 billion per year; consumer agri-food imports exceed USD 1.53 billion. Vegetable oils, sugar, grains, poultry, industrial dairy and off-season fruit remain import-dependent.
Georgia maintains FTAs with CIS, Turkey, China, EFTA and the EU, so many origins enter duty-free. Iranian cost competitiveness still defends shelf position where logistics are managed well.
- Fresh fruit & vegetables: apples, northern kiwi, cluster tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, eggplant — peak autumn to spring.
- Nuts & spices: natural-open pistachios, golden and sultana raisins, Mazafati dates, Iranian saffron.
- Processed & dairy: canned and drum tomato paste, UHT cream and milk, white cheese, biscuits and chocolate at competitive prices.
| Group | Items | Peak | Buyers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh fruit | Apple, kiwi | Nov–May | Supermarkets, wholesale markets |
| Vegetables | Tomato, pepper, cucumber | Dec–Jun | Hotels, distributors |
| Nuts | Raisins, pistachio | Year-round | Bakeries, wholesalers |
| Canned | Paste, pulses | Year-round | Households, catering |
| Dairy | Cream, cheese, milk | Year-round | National chains |
Georgian importers require valid COAs and EU-style MRL compliance to avoid rejection or fines. Customs may test nitrates in vegetables, organophosphate/chlorine residues, heavy metals and aflatoxin in pistachios.
| Product | Index | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Tomato paste | Brix / Bostwick | 28–30 or 36–38%; <7 cm/30s |
| Apple | Calibre / firmness | 70–85 mm; >6 kg/cm² |
| Kiwi | Brix / firmness | 6.2–6.5; ≥6.5 kg/cm² |
| Pistachio | Moisture / aflatoxin | <5%; <10 µg/kg |
| UHT cream | Fat / sterility | 30–32%; no viable microbes |
Georgia applies 0%, 5% and 12% duty tiers; 80–90% of lines are zero-rated but fresh produce, dairy, honey and nuts often face 12%. VAT is 18% on CIF plus duty. Clearance fees: 5 GEL under GEL 3,000 value and 60 GEL above.
| Product | HS | Duty + VAT | Documents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh apples | 0808.1022 | 12% + 18% VAT | Phytosanitary, quarantine |
| Kiwi | 0810.5024 | 12% + VAT | Temperature & firmness control |
| Raisins | 0806.2026 | 12% + VAT | Moisture, sulfite |

The NFA, with customs, enforces documentation, sampling and HACCP across the chain. Government Resolution No. 301 requires readable Georgian labels: name, descending ingredients, allergens, net weight, dates, storage, local importer and nutrition table. Organic claims without proof are penalised; non-compliant disposable food plastics are banned.
6. Дистрибуция, сети и HoReCa
Modern chains control over half of retail: Ori Nabiji (~17%), Nikora (~16%), Carrefour, Agrohub and Goodwill for premium pistachio, Piarom dates and gift packs. Hotels and restaurants generate about USD 1.25 billion turnover and buy industrial tomato drums, nut slivers and bulk ingredients weekly.
| Country | Strength | Weakness | Key lines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey | FTA, branding, daily trucks | Energy & wage inflation | Produce, paste, biscuits |
| Russia | Language, grain scale | Sanctions, weak produce | Flour, oil, meat |
| Azerbaijan | Land/rail link | Limited processing | Tomato, stone fruit |
| Iran | Cost, four-season supply | No direct border | Kiwi, apple, paste, pistachio |
Use 5-ply moisture-resistant cartons, ISPM 15 pallets (100×120 cm), corner boards and strapping for mountain transit. MAP extends apple and kiwi life. Target 0 to +2°C at 90% RH for apples; 0 to −0.5°C at 95% with ethylene filters for kiwi. Minimum two data loggers per reefer and unobstructed air flow over pallets.
| Corridor | Crossing | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armenia | Norduz – Sadakhlo | 3–5 days | Shortest; winter snow risk |
| Azerbaijan | Astara – Red Bridge | 2–4 days | Motorway; transit tolls |
| Turkey | Bazargan – Sarp/Vale | 3–5 days | Batumi & west ports |
| Rail Astara–Tbilisi | Baku – Georgia | 6–9 days | Grains & bulk |
Delivered price includes factory cost, sorting, cartons, cold storage, insurance and transit. Contracts quote USD/EUR; local books use GEL. Common terms: 30% advance and 70% after CMR, health certificates and border release. Settlements often route via UAE, Armenia or licensed Tbilisi exchange desks.
