This technical report covers Negin Qalamdar saffron — one of the finest commercial grades of red gold. International procurement managers, traders and food manufacturers will find dimensional and micrometric stigma criteria, laboratory limits, processing and storage practice, quality validation and bulk contract risk management based on recognised test methods.

Qalamdar Negin combines high bioactive content with intact physical structure: three-branched morphology, healthy trumpet tips and absence of curl or breakage make it the benchmark for post-harvest processing. Iran is the main origin; even a few hours’ delay after picking can thin the “pen” body.

1. Commercial position and thick-stigma geography

Premium saffron thrives on central and eastern Iranian plateau climates — sandy-loam soils and cold autumn nights. Khorasan and hubs such as Torbat-e Heydarieh, Zaveh, Qaenat, Gonabad, Ferdows and Bakharz yield the thickest stigmas. Over 200–300 tonnes ship annually to 60+ countries; demand has shifted toward ultra-premium grades including Negin Qalamdar.

2. Stigma morphology and Qalamdar differentiation

The stigma is the upper part of the pistil in Crocus sativus — a hollow tube widening into a trumpet (trompette) at the tip. In Qalamdar Negin, cutting sits exactly on the red–white border with no style entering the lot.

3. Geometric and micrometric “pen” criteria

“Qalamdar” refers to body diameter and fleshy texture after drying. Elite lots run 24–28 mm length; mid-shaft diameter should not fall below 1.0 mm. Trumpet width up to 2.5 mm is the main separator from Super Negin.

Trumpet width1.5–2.3 mmCritical

4. Mechanised processing and drying

Fresh stigmas hold >80% water. Multi-day shade drying wrinkles threads and thins diameter. Qalamdar form needs dehydration in under one hour.

  • Induced-air dryers: 60–65°C for 35–50 minutes — preserves spongy cell structure.
  • Press / “ironing” lines: even pressure between mesh with warm air — limits twist, spreads tissue for display packs.
  • Above 70°C or excess pressure: tissue collapse, crocin loss and darkening.

5. Laboratory evaluation (ISO 3632 and national standard 259)

UV-Vis: crocin (440 nm) minimum 190 for ISO grade I; export Qalamdar often 240–285. Picrocrocin (257 nm) 85–110; safranal (330 nm) 20–50 — values above 50 suggest age or overheating.

HPLC for synthetic dyes and destination MRL/heavy-metal panels are mandatory for professional import.

6. Fraud detection and bulk QC

Common defects: wilted stigmas, overheated dark colour, high fines, clumping. Adulteration: weighting with salt/sugar/glycerine (acid-insoluble ash, blot test), dyed style (40× loupe and 250–500 nm spectrum), warm-water release at 60°C — gentle yellow-orange halo while threads stay red.

7. Target export markets

Gulf: thick pen, three-branched lots, khatam tins 50–250 g. Spain/EU: crocin >250, MRL, 1–5 kg cartons. China: GACC, 1–5 g crystal units. Germany/Italy: ash and organic panels.

UAEThick pen, triple branch250–500 g tins
SpainCrocin, MRL1–5 kg cartons

8. Customs and HS codes

General code 091020; 09102010 retail ≤10 g; 09102030 10–30 g; 09102090 bulk and larger packs. Documents: phytosanitary, health, origin, COA, China GACC where required.

9. MAP packaging and protective layers

Crystal PS jars, tin-plated khatam cans, PET/ALU/PE laminate for 1–5 kg. MAP with high-purity nitrogen limits crocin oxidation and can protect safranal for up to 36 months. Five-ply cartons and foam for air freight.

10. Logistics and warehousing

Air freight is default. Store at 15–18°C, RH ≤40%, data loggers on shipments >50 kg, max five carton layers per pallet.

11. Bulk pricing and Iran’s edge

Premium runs 10–25% above standard Negin and 30–40% above Sargol. Drivers: Aban–Azar harvest, crocin above 250, Incoterm (Mashhad, IKIA, CPT Dubai/Frankfurt).

12. Pharma, food and luxury uses

High crocin/safranal for supplements; hydroalcoholic extract in premium cosmetics; whole Qalamdar threads on Michelin-tier plates instead of powder.

Summary

Negin Qalamdar sits at the top of the saffron quality pyramid: thick pen, intact trumpet, crocin >240, ISO 3632 discipline, MAP and air logistics control quality loss. Iranco connects documented Khorasan processing capacity to structured bulk orders.

FAQ

Qalamdar vs Super Negin?

Qalamdar is thicker with wider trumpet (1.5–2.5 mm); Super Negin may be longer but slimmer.

Drying and Qalamdar shape?

Mechanised ~60°C drying under one hour prevents cell collapse.
